Part P is a section of the building regulations introduced in 2005 to ensure that electrical work carried out in domestic premises meets practical safety standards. Part P applies to all new electrical works and only repairs and the most minor extensions to existing systems are exempt. Part P applies particularly to work carried out in special locations, such as kitchens and bathrooms.
A "competent person" under Part P is an electrician who has been independently assessed for competence in electrical installation and safety. A competent person is permitted to assess and inspect their own work without having to call out local authority building inspectors. This significantly reduces the cost of smaller installations and extensions as local authority call out charges are avoided.
At the end of such a piece of work a qualified electrician will issue you with a BS7671 certificate showing that the work was carried out to appropriate standards.
